Plan Your Overland Trip
Where to Begin Your Planning
With a region as diverse and expansive as Northern and Central California, planning an adventure can feel overwhelming. Here’s a simple way to get started:
Choose Your Time of Year
Our rental season runs from April through October.
There’s no single “best” time to visit Northern and Central California—each season has something unique to offer:
- April–May: Spring brings wildflowers, fewer crowds, and mild temperatures. Some higher-elevation areas may still have snow, and certain roads or campgrounds could have limited access.
- June–August: The warmest and most popular months. Coastal areas like Big Sur stay cooler and foggy, while inland regions can get quite hot. This is peak travel season, so expect more visitors.
- September–October: Often considered the sweet spot—fewer crowds, warm days, and cooler nights. Fall colors begin to show in some regions, and conditions are ideal for outdoor exploration.
Decide How Long to Stay
Most of our rentals require a minimum 7-day stay, which is a great starting point.
- 7 days: Focus on one area, such as the coast (e.g., Pacific Coast Highway) or inland highlights like Yosemite National Park. Trying to cover too much ground can feel rushed.
- 10–14 days: Gives you time to explore both coastal and inland regions at a more relaxed pace.
Step 3: Book Your Vehicle
Reserve online or call to confirm your booking. A 25% deposit is required at the time of reservation, with the remaining balance due 30 days before arrival.
Plan Your Itinerary (or Keep It Flexible)
One of the best parts of overland travel is flexibility—you can plan every stop or take a more spontaneous approach.
A few tips:
- Schedule a night or two at a hotel, lodge, or B&B for a mid-trip refresh (laundry, showers, Wi-Fi).
- Popular campgrounds can fill up quickly, especially on weekends and during peak season.
- Dispersed (boondock) camping spots are often more remote, so plan ahead if you have early tours or reservations nearby.
Finalize the Details
About a month before your trip, we’ll connect to confirm arrival time, orientation, any add-ons, and collect your final payment.
Step 6: Pack Smart
Your rental includes essentials like bedding, camp chairs, a table, stove, and kitchen gear.
When packing:
- Dress in layers—coastal fog and inland heat can create big temperature swings.
- Bring a light rain jacket and comfortable hiking shoes.
- Don’t forget a hat and sunscreen—the California sun can be strong, even on cooler days.
With a mix of planning and flexibility, your Northern and Central California adventure can be as laid-back or as action-packed as you want.
